7 Protocols and VPN in one Cloud Adapter

Cloud Adapter News

With version 0.9, Beckhoff ADS has been included as the 7th protocol in the popular Universal Cloud Adapter. The lightweight software is a flexible multi-talent for fast cloud connection.

Experienced automation engineers know the problem: It is rare to find a homogeneous technology landscape. In one location, Siemens was installed more often, while Allen-Bradley was used abroad. Some older systems can only be accessed via Modbus and not all newly acquired controllers support OPC UA. At the same time, the building’s components are only accessible via BACnet, while some others are accessible via MBus. This is exactly where the Universal Cloud Adapter comes in: The software, which is available for Windows and Linux, can be installed in just one minute and offers a comprehensive set of communication protocols for industry, buildings and energy.

Unification for TwinCAT ADS

The latest version of the Universal Cloud Adapter now replaces the TwinCAT Cloud Adapter for Windows. Multiple connections can now be established with just one gateway via the Beckhoff ADS protocol. However, the possibility of using Windows CE-based Beckhoff controllers without an additional gateway remains.

Fast configuration

After installation, you are directed to the intuitive web interface. Project number and onboarding password are sufficient and the encrypted cloud connection is established. Now all required connections to local controllers, sensors and measuring components can be established. With the more modern protocols, only a few parameters need to be specified and the complete selection of variables is already available in the cloud. In the case of older protocols without browse functionality, immediate feedback is provided in the configuration interface. In addition, the variable list can be imported and exported in this case.

Remote access via VPN

You have the choice: Do you only want to record process data or should remote maintenance via VPN also be enabled. The optional VPN functionality can be activated with just one click. If VPN is activated, administrators can establish a 1-to-1 connection with the cloud adapter to exchange data, perform analyses or import updates. Thus, even the PLC program can be updated remotely via VPN.

The first step is the easiest

Use our Getting Started Guide or watch the 3-minute introductory video that explains the installation on any Linux device. All details about the different communication protocols and installation options are described in the documentation.
